People have lost jobs due to looming recessions or even sometimes poor fits and or performance. Yet, it is not the worst thing that can happen to you. It can be a blessing if it propels you to do something that lights your fire.
I have had job losses and personally know the pain, but I also know the pain of being in places and spaces that are misaligned with your passion.
I have a friend who told me on many occasions that his job is literally sucking the life out of him. Although it pays well, there is no real sense of meaning, purpose, or fulfillment for him. He is essentially going through the motions to collect a paycheck, or one could say “silently quitting”.
He is not alone according to recent data that shows only 20% of Americans have a sense of passion about their jobs.
When you stay in work environments where you have no passion or connection, you begin to lose yourself. I do realize that people have bills to pay and responsibilities and cannot just quit their jobs. Still, it is critical that you work on an exit strategy that may include updating your resume, networking, going back to school, or creating a business plan.
Staying in a job where you are just collecting a paycheck is not good for you or the employer. Your ability to give and be your best is limited in these situations which shortchanges you and your employer.
You deserve to be in a career or job where you can make a good living while having a sense of meaning and purpose. Most spend at least 1,040 hours per year working…make sure that they are not empty hours but ones of meaning, purpose, and productivity.
Losing a job can be painful but losing yourself is tragic. Who wants to operate like an empty robot day after day forcing yourself out of bed every day to do something that depletes you?
You deserve better! Don’t lose yourself!
