Earlier this year, I met a young man who is very successful and appears to have it all together. He has advanced degrees and certifications, a high-paying job, and a beautiful family.  However, the more I talk to him, the more I see that he is broken inside. I have had conversations with several others like him and have seen the same pattern.

We live in a society that puts a premium on success, and I am all for success. But if success means that you have all the external indicators that people find attractive yet you are broken inside, then that is the type of success that I can do without.

I believe it is critical that we are complete as people. At the core, everyone and everything has to have a strong foundation to weather life’s storms and to reach higher heights. If you build a structure and do not shore up the foundation, it will likely collapse when faced with the many forces of nature. It also may simply succumb to the weight of the floors above it or the weight of the structure itself!

As people, we are no different! If our sense of self-worth – minus the jobs, houses, fancy cars, accolades, positions, fame and fortune – is lacking, we are destined for failure. What does it say about us as a society if we shine on the outside, but are broken inside?

We cannot win until we heal the person within. We need success that manifests itself on the inside and outside of us. We don’t need success that is simply external and superficial!  Look at some of our celebrities, who shine brightly like stars, but then crash to earth like meteorites! Those crashes have a lot to do with the pressures of stardom, and in many cases, very fragile foundations and the pursuit of superficial and fleeting things.

Again, I am a big fan of success that is substantive and sustainable, not based on superficiality. I want people to have real success that is deeper than what is seen on the outside of the person. I want people to realize their full potential, live authentically, and lead meaningful and purposeful lives. Let’s explore some ways to heal the inner self:

Strategies for Real Success

1. Put In The Work – Nothing worth having is easy; we need to put in the work and take the time to explore who we are as people (apart from what we do and have) and reflect on the experiences that have shaped us. We also need to figure out where we have work to do. This process may start with some serious introspection, and it may be a good idea to connect with a professional counselor to help you work through some issues.
2. Change the Narrative – We need to redefine what success is for us. I believe that true success is realizing your potential and helping others to realize theirs. Success is not just about us. But it starts with understanding our value and purpose. When we know our value and true worth apart from superficial things and people, we are in a great position to be successful on many levels. But you cannot help others achieve success until you first help yourself.
3. Pray – Prayer is a powerful tool to achieve real success. Pray for wisdom and strength to achieve your goals. Also, pray for the strength and power to overcome obstacles in your life.  Additionally, pray for wisdom to make the right decisions and for clarity to sort out and heal from the internal struggles. Pray for wisdom to move beyond seeking approval of others. Pray for strength to live wisely and authentically. Pray for understanding regarding who you are as a person, so that you can walk in your purpose.
4. Establish Healthy Relationships – When you are working through who you are and know your value, you cannot be around people who diminish your value.  You need relationships with people that are healthy and that bring out the best in you. You need to bond with people who challenge you and have your best interest at heart. You need to build relationships with people who love you enough to tell you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it. Unfortunately, many of us are too often exposed to toxic relationships with people who diminish our value and our ability to be successful. We need to know when to take a bow from people and relationships that diminish us. Check out my previous post:  Take A Bow: How to Know When It’s Time to Move On!

I do not have all the answers, but I wanted to share with you some things that can help you achieve real success and heal your inner self. In order to get on the road to greatness and success, you must heal the person within.

Good luck pursuing real success, as it is not a destination, but a journey!

Very timely for me brother! After some personal work over the last few years, I’m now redefining what success is for me. Feeling really good about where things are going. Being in a daily prayer habit has been fantastic. I have often forgotten that I was put on this earth first for God’s pleasure, a relationship with Him. Which means, my worth isn’t based on something that I do or how much I have. Starting there has been a great reset. Relationship selection is critical in life. Its almost everything. I’ve learned that you can’t always reconcile even when you… Read more »
